The Delaware Board of Pilot Commissioners is now seeking applications from individuals who are interested in being considered for appointment as an apprentice pilot.
The statutory requirements, in accordance with 23 Del. C. § 114(a), are that each applicant hold either a baccalaureate degree from a recognized and duly certified college or university or from a maritime academy operated by the United States or a state, or a United States Coast Guard issued license to serve as third-mate on all oceans or master in near coastal waters aboard vessels of no less than 1,600 tons, or a higher class license.
The apprenticeship application and supplemental questionnaire may be obtained online at delpros.delaware.gov. The apprenticeship application and supplemental questionnaire will be accepted from June 22, 2026 through July 22, 2026. A fee of $195 must be paid to submit the application.
