BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Mesa, as follows:
Section 1. The City of Mesa calls the Primary Election, and if required, the General Election, to be held on the date prescribed by law and authorizes the City Clerk to take all necessary actions to comply with any election changes enacted by the Arizona State Legislature.
A. That August 4, 2026, unless otherwise amended by the Arizona State Legislature, is set as the date for holding the Primary Election in the City of Mesa for the nomination of candidates for the office of Councilmember in Council Districts 4, 5, and 6, whose terms shall expire in January 2031.
B. In accordance with the City Charter, if a candidate for the office of District Councilmember receives at the Primary Election a number of votes constituting a majority of all valid ballots cast for the office of Councilmember in that district, the candidate shall be declared elected without appearing on the General Election ballot.
C. In accordance with the City Charter and state law, a General Election shall be held on November 3, 2026 for those seats where no candidate was elected at the Primary Election. For each such seat, the two candidates – or more than two in the event of a tie vote – receiving the highest number of valid votes cast at the Primary Election for that office shall be the only persons named on the ballot at the General Election.
Section 2. Candidates seeking municipal office may obtain nomination paperwork, including petitions and other required forms, at the Office of the City Clerk located at 20 E. Main Street, Mesa, Arizona. All nomination paperwork must be filed at the Office of the City Clerk no earlier than March 9, 2026, and no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 6, 2026, in order for candidates’ names to appear on the Primary Election ballot. If the primary election date is changed, the filing period will be adjusted accordingly to comply with state law.
Section 3. Citizens must be registered to vote by July 6, 2026, for the Primary Election and by October 5, 2026, for the General Election. Maricopa County registration and voting lists will be used for the municipal elections. If the primary election is changed, the deadline will be adjusted accordingly to comply with state law.
Section 4. Polling places shall be open at 6:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.
