The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is conducting the Third Five-Year Review of the Former Lockbourne Air Force Base Landfill site located in Franklin County, Ohio. The Former Lockbourne Air Force Base Landfill is located on property that is part of Rickenbacker International Airport, 2241 John Circle Drive, Columbus, OH 43217. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers initiated the Third Five-Year Review of the implemented remedy at the Former Lockbourne Air Force Base Landfill site located east of the Village of Lockbourne Ohio, in accordance with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). The CERCLA five-year review process involves evaluating the risk posed by contaminants remaining at the site. The purpose of the review is to ensure that the implemented remedy continues to function as intended and continues to be protective of human health and the environment. Installation of the final remedy commenced in 2013 and was completed in 2017. The remedy for the site consisted of consolidation of landfill wastes, installation of a landfill cover, institutional controls, and long-term monitoring. Regular inspections and groundwater monitoring provides information to determine that the remedy implemented continues to be protective of human health and the environment. The Third Five-Year Review of the Former Lockbourne Air Force Base is scheduled to be completed by December 15, 2026 and an additional public notice will be provided once the final Report is published. The Third Five-Year Review Report will be added to the local information repository at the Columbus Metropolitan Library Southeast Branch, 3980 S. Hamilton Road, Groveport, OH 43125.
