Notice of Second Five-Year Review for Former Camp Claiborne Munitions Response Sites (MRS)-1, MRS-2, MRS-3, and MRS-4.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Fort Worth District is initiating the second Five-Year Review for Camp Claiborne which is a formerly used defense site (FUDS) located 15 miles southeast of Alexandria, LA in the Kisatchie National Forest. The property number for this site is A06LA0006. This review includes the Impact Areas 1 through 4. The goal of the FUDS program is to identify, monitor, and clean-up former Department of Defense-leased or owned properties impacted with hazardous materials and relinquished from Federal use prior to October 17, 1986. Based on the March 2016 Decision Documents, the selected remedy for all four sites was a combination of surface removals of munitions and explosives of concern followed by land use controls consisting of educational awareness activities. The goal of the land use controls is to reduce the risk from munitions and explosives of concern that may potentially remain at the site. A review of the selected remedy with regard to protection of human health and the environment is performed every five years as a statutory requirement of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). USACE is currently conducting this review and the report will be made available to the public once completed.
Once this Five-Year Review is completed, the results will be included in the Administrative Record at the Rapides Parish Library, and the Calcasieu Ranger Station (Kisatchie National Forest).
