Wallkill River NWR Footbridge Replacement Project
Take notice that an application for an authorization under a freshwater wetlands general permit 17A and a flood hazard area general permit 12 is being submitted to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Land Resource Protection for the development described below:
APPLICANT: Ocean Construction c/o Joseph Rodriguez
PROJECT NAME: WALLKILL RIVER NWR FOOTBRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The proposed project consists of installation of a prefabricated footbridge to replace a former railroad bed and bridge crossing over Papakating Creek. The original steel and timber railroad bridge deck was unsafe for use and was removed. The former bridge abutments and two piers remain in place. The railroad bed is currently used as a multi-use trail which is topped with gravel. The replacement footbridge will be installed along the same alignment as the former railroad bridge. The footbridge replacement will reconnect the local multi-use trail system across Papakating Creek.
The approach embankments will be supported by wing walls. Minimal grading will be completed to re-tie the proposed bridge into the existing railroad bed/approaches. Minimal vegetation clearing is proposed within the limits of disturbance to allow construction of the proposed approaches. Construction will consist of driving piles for each abutment, and the abutments formed and cast. The approaches to the new abutments will be graded to tie the bridge into the existing gravel path. Installation of the prefabricated truss bridge will be facilitated by a crane. A temporary stone mat will be installed to support the crane. The limits of disturbance will be minimized to the maximum extent practicable.
