Williams, RPG CleanEarth, Inc. has submitted an application to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) for the reissuance of the solid waste management permit for the existing CleanEarth, Inc. medical waste processing facility located at 89 Wesley Grant Road, Hattiesburg, MS 39401. The application proposes the continued management and processing of medical waste at the \ facility. The application does not propose any changes or modifications to the facility or the facility operations. The draft permit, Solid Waste Management Permit No. SW0180050500, recognizes a 3.77-acre property with a fully enclosed metal building used for the processing of medical waste. The CleanEarth facility accepts medical waste as defined by the Mississippi Department of Health from hospitals, nursing homes, and similar locations as approved in the Forrest County Solid Waste Management Plan. This waste, which does not include pathological or radioactive waste, is sterilized at a set pressure and temperature for a specific time frame in a rotoclave machine. The sterilized waste is then shredded prior to disposal at a permitted municipal solid waste landfill. All liquids produced by the process are either recirculated into the system or pumped to a properly permitted wastewater treatment plant. The MDEQ, as the staff of the Mississippi Environmental Quality Permit Board (Permit Board) has developed a draft permit based on our review of the information submitted by the applicant to the MDEQ. A copy of the draft permit may be found on the MDEQ website at: https://www.mdeq.ms.gov/ensearch/epd-permits-at-public-notice/. The available information also includes a rationale document that contains information on the proposed project and the development of the draft permit. This information can also be acquired by contacting the MDEQ as described at the end of this notice. The MDEQ is soliciting public input on the draft permit on behalf of the Permit Board for the proposed reissuance with modification of the solid waste management permit. Public input on the draft permit and supporting documentation is an important element in the staff evaluation and formulation of final determinations regarding the application. The draft permit conditions have been developed to ensure compliance with all State and Federal regulations but are subject to change based on information received through public participation. Persons wishing to comment on or object to the draft permit are invited to by submitting comments in writing to Mr. Ross D. Williams at the Permit Board's address shown above or by email to RWilliams@mdeq.ms.gov, no later than February 23, 2026, the end of the thirty (30) day public comment period. All comments received from the public by this date will be reviewed and considered in the final determinations regarding the draft permit. Please be advised that comments or concerns related to local zoning or land use are generally within the jurisdiction of the local government and not the Permit Board.
