Minutes of Regular Board Meeting
March 4, 2026
The regular school board meeting was called to order in open session at 6:30 p.m by President Williams. Roll call indicated all were present with the exception of Ms. DeFord, who arrived at 6:41 p.m.
IV. Superintendent's Report and Recognitions -
Ms. Roemer provided the Board with the following updates:
We are grateful to Jimmy Dorangrichia, a retired SM Firefighter and Building Sub, who taught CPR to 175 eighth graders this week.
SM Legacy awarded two grants at our last meeting. One went to the HS Music department to supplement the purchase of a trailer for transporting instruments and equipment. The other went to the 2nd grade group at Lakeview for the Lakeview Learning Garden. Students have been utilizing their skills for a project-based experience to redesign the garden and will be collaborating with We Got This Garden to build flower and garden beds that are sustainable.
We honored several You Crushed It Award winners this week. From Lakeview, we honored Dave Hellrung, who was nominated by a parent and Ellie Genduso, who was nominated by Chris Sepersky. From Luther, we honored Kim Au and Allison Simmons who were nominated by colleagues. From Blakewood, we honored Bob Lubetski who was nominated by a parent and Brie Williams who was nominated by a number of her colleagues.
Congratulations to Rusty Hamilton who finished in 4th place at the State Wrestling meet and to our other athletes that competed in Cheer and Wrestling last week.
V. Consent Agenda -
Mr. Hansen removed the minutes from the February 18, 2026 meeting from the consent agenda. Moved by Hansen and seconded by Simmons that the Board approve the consent agenda as follows:
A. Adoption of Agenda.
B. Approval of Bills for Payment in the Amount of $1,888,117.18
C. Approval of Staffing - New Hires, Resignations, Retirements, Revised FTE:
Hire of the following teachers effective for the 2026-27 School year:
Madison Kutz - MS Math Teacher
Sara Dharani - HS Social Studies Teacher
Kristina Cheever - Elementary Teacher
Brandon Furuta - Elementary Multilingual Teacher
Arianna Olig - Elementary Teacher
Resignation of Chad Enloe, MS Social Studies Teacher, effective June 11, 2026
Retirement of Dan Lesniak, HS Science Teacher, effective June 11, 2026
D. Approval of Shared Services Agreement for Woodland Conference Athletic Conference 66.030
E. Approval of Demco as the preferred vendor for classroom furniture, as presented.
F. Approval of the proposal from Quality Door and Hardware to replace doors at Lakeview Elementary, as presented.
G. Approval of Second Reading of Revised Policy 166 - Student Representatives on the School Board, as presented.
All voted aye by roll call. Motion carried 6-0.
Moved by Hansen and seconded by Jurowski that the Board approve the Minutes from the February 18, 2026 Board Meeting. Genduso, Hansen, Hintz, Jurowski, and Simmons voted aye. Williams abstained. Motion carried 5-0.
VI. Information/Discussion/Possible Action:
A. 2026-27 Middle School Schedule Revision Approval - Deidre Roemer
Moved by Genduso and seconded by Hansen that the Board approve the Revised Middle School Schedule effective with the 2026-27 school year, as presented. All voted aye by roll call. Motion carried 7-0.
B. Middle School Math Resource Approval - Christie Gajewski
Moved by Hintz and seconded by DeFord that the Board approve the Middle School Math Core Resource, as presented. All voted aye by roll call. Motion carried 7-0.
C. Fitness Center and Walking Track Safety Recommendation Discussion - Deidre Roemer
The Board discussed potential options for Fitness Center and Walking Track availability to the public.
D. Public Comments - the Board listened to residents' concerns about the reduced hours for the fitness center and walking track before any decisions were made.
E. Fitness Center and Walking Track Recommendation and Possible Approval - Deidre Roemer Moved by DeFord and seconded by Hansen that the Board approve the Fitness Center and
Walking Track Recommendation, effective April 6, 2026, related to hours of operation, as presented and
direct the administration to implement procedures related to use of cell phones, visitor policy, and specific hours of operation connected with the school schedule. DeFord, Hansen, Simmons, and Williams voted aye. Genduso, Hintz, and Jurowski voted nay. Motion carried 4-3.
F. 2026-27 Staffing Plan Approval - Jen Sielaff
Moved by Simmons and seconded by Hintz that the Board approve the Revised FTE and combined positions as presented in the 2026-27 Staffing Plan. All voted aye by roll call. Motion carried 7-0.
VII. President's Report - Ms. Williams previewed the upcoming meeting topics.
VIII. Announcements - There are two upcoming PAC events including a comedy show featuring an SM grad as well as the school musical, Hello Dolly.
IX. Closed Session - Moved by Hansen and seconded by Genduso that the Board move into Closed Session at 10:44 p.m. pursuant to Wisconsin Statutes Section 19.85(1)(e) to deliberate or negotiate the purchasing of public properties, the investing of public funds, or conducting other specified public business, whenever competitive or bargaining reasons require a closed session to discuss teacher, secretary, and paraprofessional negotiations and pursuant to Wisconsin Statutes Section 19.85(1)(c) to consider employment, promotion, compensation or performance evaluation data of any public employee over which the governmental body has jurisdiction or exercises responsibility to discuss the superintendent evaluation. Motion carried 7-0.
X. Adjournment - The board meeting was adjourned at 11:50 pm subject to the call of President Willams.
XI.
