PUBLIC HEARING/COMMENT PERIOD NOTICE
JEFFERSON COUNTY SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN
As required by the Alabama Solid Wastes & Recyclable Materials Management Act (SWRMMA), Code of Alabama 1975, §22-27-47, the Jefferson County Commission will conduct a public hearing to solicit public comment concerning the County’s Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP or Plan). The Public Hearing will be held Tuesday May 12, 2026 at 9:00 AM at the Jefferson County Roads and Transportation Department Conference Room (in the Jefferson County Courthouse), Suite A-200, 716 Richard Arrington Jr Blvd. N, Birmingham, AL.
Each city and county of the State of Alabama is required to develop and adopt a comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan which forecasts and describes the management of solid waste generated within the local government’s jurisdiction over a minimum 10-year period. The SWMP includes topics such as describing the types and volumes of solid waste generated in the county, the methods of collection, transportation and disposal of the solid waste, descriptions of the major recycling programs in the county and other solid waste management issues.
Copies of the draft Jefferson County Solid Waste Management Plan will be available for review, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Mondays through Fridays (excluding holidays), between the dates of April 10, 2026 and May 15, 2026 At the Offices of the Jefferson County Roads and Transportation Department, Suite A200, 716 Richard Arrington Jr Blvd. N, Birmingham, AL. If any local citizen wishes to submit public comments, such comments shall be submitted in writing no later than 9:00 AM on May 12, 2026 to: Mike Kenerley, Jefferson County Roads and Transportation Department, Suite A-200, 716 Richard Arrington Jr Blvd. N, Birmingham, AL 35203 or Kenerleym@jccal.org. Public comments may also be submitted, in writing, at the Public Hearing (date and address given above). In order to affect final decisions or content of the SWMP, comments must offer technically substantial information that is applicable to the proposed Plan.
