NOTICE OF INTENT TO ADOPT AN EARNED INCOME TAX
Notice is hereby given that pursuant to the authority of the Local Tax Enabling Act (Act of December 31, 1965, P. l. 1257 53 P. S. 6901, et seq.) Canaan Township intends to consider for adoption an ordinance levying an earned income tax of 1% In the judgement of the members of the Canaan Township Board of Supervisors, such a tax is necessary to produce additional revenue to fund the general operating expenses of Canaan Township.
The amount of revenue estimated to be derived from the tax is $125,000.00 per year.
The Earned Income Tax will impose a one percent (1%) on salaries, wages, commissions, bonuses, incentive payments, fees, tips and other compensation earned by residents of and those who work in Canaan Township on or after January 1, 2026 and on the net profits earned on the operation of business, profession or other activity by those who conduct the business, profession or other activity in Canaan township on or after that date. The ordinance will require the filing of returns, providing information by employers and those subject to the tax and the collection of the tax by the employers at source. The ordinance will also provide for the administration and enforcement of the tax.
The ordinance will be considered for adoption at the meeting of the Canaan Township Supervisors scheduled for Wednesday, November 5, 2025, 7:00PM at Ladore Lodge 398 South Street Waymart PA 18472.
