The Washoe County School District would like to make Parents/Guardians, Former Students, and Eligible (Adult) Students aware that Special Education records of students whose birth year is 1997 will be permanently destroyed beginning January 26, 2026. Special Education records are records collected by the Washoe County School District, and relate to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of Special Education in the district. In accordance with federal and state laws, these records must be maintained for a period of 6 years after Special Education Services have ended for the student. Special Education services end when the student is no longer eligible for services, graduates or completes the student’s educational program at age 22 or moves from the district.
For students whose birth year is after 1997, the Washoe County School District is maintaining the file electronically. Special Education services end when the student is no longer eligible for services, graduates with a standard diploma, reaches the age 22, or moves from the district. Simply stated: Students whose birth year is after 1997 will still have records maintained by the school district for the required period of time.
This notification is solely to provide awareness to the students whose birth year is 1997. If you wish to request a copy of the educational records prior to January 26, 2026, such requests of student records can be made to Student Enrollment and Records at https://washoeschoolsnv.scriborder.com/. If you have questions about making a request or need assistance, please contact Student Records at (775) 861-4428. However, students whose birth year is 1997 will not be able to request special education records after January 26, 2026, because the district is no longer required to retain those records and, thus, such records will no longer exist.
Washoe County School District will continue to maintain a permanent record also known as a transcript, without time limitation, of a student's name, address, phone number, student grades, grade level completed, and year completed for any student who attended school within the Washoe County School District.
