NOTICE OF INTENT TO ABANDON PORTIONS OF STRONG STREET,
MADISON AVENUE,
THOMAS STREET, AND HOYT STREET
Pursuant to the provisions of O.C.G.A. Section 32-7-2, et seq., and/or Section 7-502(a) of the Charter of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, the Mayor and Commission of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, intends to consider the abandonment of the following roadways (or portions of roadways) within Athens-Clarke County and any associated roadway infrastructure: (1) a portion of Strong Street between North Jackson Street and East Dougherty Street; (2) an unopened portion of Madison Avenue between North Jackson Street and East Dougherty Street; (3) an unopened portion of Thomas Street between the intersection of East Dougherty Street/North Avenue and Hoyt Street; and (4) a portion of Hoyt Street between the unopened portion of Thomas Street and North Avenue. A survey showing the proposed roadways to be abandoned is on file and available for public inspection at Athens-Clarke County Department of Transportation and Public Works, located at 120 W Dougherty Street, Athens, Georgia, open Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
A public hearing on the abandonment for each of the above-listed roadways (or portions thereof) shall be held at the regular business meeting of the Mayor and Commission on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at 6:00 pm in the Commission Chamber City Hall, 301 College Avenue, Athens, Georgia. At the meeting, the Mayor and Commission will consider whether these roadways have for any reason ceased to be used by the public to the extent that no substantial public purpose is served by them or that their removal from the public road system is otherwise in the best public interest. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the meeting.
