NOTICE OF COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOW
The City of South Bend has committed to developing a public notification program regarding the potential health impacts of combined sewer overflows (CSOs).
The goals of the public notification program are to notify interested residents when wet weather sewer overflows are likely to occur, to educate them about the health hazards associated with wet weather overflows in our surface waterways, and to enable them to protect themselves and their families from those hazards.
When it rains or when there is a snowmelt, the sewers in the older parts of South Bend can overflow – sending untreated rainwater and sewage into the St. Joseph River. After a rainstorm or snowmelt, you should avoid contact with streams in the combined sewer area for at least 72 hours. Signs are posted along our waterways to identify the wet weather overflow outfall locations.
Even in dry weather, the St. Joseph River in South Bend is a large fast-flowing stream that is a potentially dangerous place to play and it's best to avoid contact with urban streams and teach children to stay away from waterways especially in the combined sewer area. The City of South Bend is implementing many projects to clean our water and reduce and eliminate sewage overflows.
