Town of Portsmouth
Notice of Proposed
Property Tax Rate Change
The Town of Portsmouth proposes to increase its property tax levy to $67,218,115 in the 2026-2027 budget year; the property tax levy this year is $65,324,415. The FY 2026 and FY 2027 tax levies have excluded motor vehicle excise tax for the purpose of determining tax levy growth pursuant to current law. THIS IS A PROPOSED INCREASE OF 2.9%.
The Town of Portsmouth conducted a revaluation of real property, which is mandated by the State of Rhode Island. The increase in the proposed tax levy will result in a residential and commercial property tax rate of $9.84 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, as compared to the current property tax rate of $13.28 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.
Tangible personal property tax rate of $15.65 per $1,000 of assessed valuation has been capped in alignment with RIGL 44-5.3.1
A property tax rate of $9.947 would be needed in the coming budget year to raise the max levy authorized by section 44-5-2 of the General Law.
The Town of Portsmouth’s budget will be considered at the Budget Hearing on June 10, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. at the Portsmouth Town Hall at 2200 East Main Road.
