NOTICE OF LOCATION AND DESIGN APPROVAL
P. I. 0020173
CHATHAM COUNTY
Notice is hereby given in compliance with Georgia Code 22-2-109 and 32-3-5 that the Georgia Department of Transportation has approved the Location and Design of this project.
The date of location and design approval is: June 8, 2026
The project will widen and reconstruct Highlands Boulevard and Benton Boulevard from two lanes to four lanes with a raised median from State Route (SR) 17/Jimmy DeLoach Parkway to SR 30. The project is located in the City of Savannah, the City of Port Wentworth and Chatham County within Georgia Militia District 8. The project is 2.1 miles long.
The project will widen and reconstruct Highlands Boulevard and Benton Boulevard to accommodate passenger, freight and transit traffic, pedestrians and cyclists. The existing two-lane Benton Boulevard bridge over St. Augustine Creek will be widened to four lanes with a raised median. A shared-use path and a sidewalk will be constructed for the pedestrian and bicycle users in the project limits. The proposed project is located in Chatham County within the City of Savannah south of St. Augustine Creek and the City of Port Wentworth north of the creek. The existing right-of-way of Highlands Boulevard and Benton Boulevard are sufficiently wide enough to accommodate the widening to four lanes except in a few nominal areas. To complement the additional capacity on Highlands Boulevard and Benton Boulevard, the SR 17/Jimmy DeLoach Parkway intersections with Highlands Boulevard and the I-95 southbound ramp will be modified to provide additional capacity through the conversion and extension of existing right turn lanes to auxiliary lanes from 0.3 miles west of Highlands Boulevard to the SR 17 bridge over I-95 and the addition of a second left turn lane on the I-95 southbound exit ramp.
GDOT would be responsible for acquiring property rights for this project.
