Fort Lee, Farrar Island Munitions Response Site
The US Army Garrison Fort Lee is interested in soliciting public participation for an online meeting to discuss the Recognize, Retreat and Report (3Rs) program for the Farrar Island Munitions Response Site (MRS).
The Farrar Island MRS encompasses 5,666 acres, and its current land use includes residential housing, light industry, commercial, recreation, education, and wildlife preservation. The land associated with Farrar Island MRS is currently owned by Chesterfield County, Dominion Energy, Inc. (Dominion), and other private owners and is not used by Fort Lee.
Farrar Island served as an impact area for artillery during the World War I (WWI) period. The duration of use was relatively short, specifically from 15 March through 19 June 1918. Historical accounts show that 1 piece of munition/explosive of concern (MEC) was encountered. Subsequent intrusive investigations during the 2019 Remedial Investigation found no MEC or other munitions debris. However, there is a small chance civilians could encounter dangerous munitions within or near the former artillery firing range. It may be difficult to recognize an item if it is weathered, partially buried, or broken. As described in the Army's October 2024 Final 3Rs Plan for the Farrar Island Munitions Response Site, suspected munitions items should never be touched, moved, or disturbed.
The Army would like to conduct a one-hour seminar to discuss any concerns related to the Farrar Island MRS. Anyone from the local area is welcome. If enough public feedback is received, then the Army will set up a public Zoom meeting, and the link will be provided on Fort Lee's website. To express interest please contact the following:
