William Brailsford
Haynes
January 31, 1926
Today we celebrate the life and legacy of William Brailsford Haynes. Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, he demonstrated the values of hard work, faith and perseverance from an early age. Those roots shaped a life defined by excellence and service to others. His diligence led to him becoming the first black architect at Indiana University, breaking barriers at a time when doors were often closed and expectations were unjustly limited. His many achievements were not just personal victories - they were milestones that widened the path for others.
He was a steadfast provider -- reliable, responsible and unwavering. As a devoted husband he modeled love built on respect, partnership and commitment. As father to three, he taught by example, instilling discipline, confidence and pride. His legacy endures through his granddaughter and great grandson -- each generation carrying forward his wisdom, work ethic and grace.
He lived with humility, never seeking applause, yet earning deep admiration. His life reminds us that greatness does not always announce itself loudly -- it is often found in consistency, character and care for family and community.
As we reflect on the milestone of his 100th birthday on January 31st, we honor a man whose blueprint was etched not just on paper, but in the lives of all of us who knew and loved him.
