Sula "Sue"
Gamble Haynes
February 19, 1926
As we honor the milestone of her 100th heavenly birthday on February 19th, we celebrate the life and legacy of our beloved mother, Sula "Sue" Gamble Haynes.
Sue was a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, godmother, and teacher - and she nurtured every role with grace, love and unmistakable flair. Though she stood just 4 feet, 10 inches tall, she was truly a giant among us -- small in stature but colossal in spirit. She was witty and feisty, quick with a knowing look, a pearl of wisdom or a laugh that let you know she saw right through you -- and loved you anyway.
Sue was an esteemed matriarch for her entire community. In addition to her children and grandchild, she provided inspiration to countless students at Indiana University. For many she was more than a mentor; she was a steady presence, a truth-teller and a source of encouragement when it mattered most. Her gifts were abundant -- a culinary master, a skilled seamstress, and an artist with knitting needles, crochet hooks, embroidery threads and interior design. She infused everything she touched with her signature blend of creativity, precision and heart.
As we reflect on her centennial birthday, we honor her enduring legacy -- a legacy steeped in wisdom, humor, resilience and her gift for making everyone in her presence feel valued. Sue's spirit continues to illuminate our hearts, reminding us of the maternal strength, wisdom and love that will forever guide us.
