Klamath and Shasta-Trinity National Forests Prescribed Fire Project
The Klamath and Shasta-Trinity National Forests have prepared a programmatic environmental assessment (EA) for the Klamath and Shasta-Trinity National Forests' Prescribed Fire Project. The EA encompasses all national forest system lands on both forests, except the Ukonom Ranger District, which is managed by the Six Rivers National Forest. The EA is programmatic, meaning subsequent National Environmental Policy Act analysis and other regulatory compliance will be completed prior to implementation. The EA is available at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r05/klamath/projects/66583.
How to Comment and Timeframe
The EA is subject to pre-decisional administrative review process at 36 CFR 218 Subparts A and B. Public comment was initiated after the publication of the proposed amendment to the regulations at 36 CFR 218 in the Federal Register on February 6, 2026 (91 FR 5387). The EA and FONSI may be subject to the revised administrative review process if the final 36 CFR 218 rule is published before opportunity to object is initiated. Otherwise, the EA will follow the administrative review process established prior to the proposed rule.
The opportunity to comment on the EA ends 30 days following the date of publication of this legal notice. Only those who submit timely and specific written comments §218.2 regarding the project or activity during a public comment period established by the responsible official are eligible to file an objection §218.24(b)(6). For issues to be raised in objections, they must be based on previously submitted specific written comments about the EA or activity by the objector. The publication date of the legal notice in the newspaper of record is the exclusive means for calculating the time to submit written comments on the EA. The period for the opportunity to comment shall not be extended. It is the responsibility of all individuals and organizations to ensure that their comments are received in a timely manner.
Electronic comments must be submitted in a common digital format such as an email message, plain text (.txt), rich text format (.rtf), or Word (.doc, .docx) to sm.fs.ca.klamathnf.projects@usda.gov with "KSTFire" in the subject line of the email. Written comments must be submitted to: Chris Christofferson, Forest Supervisor 1711 South Main St. Yreka CA 96097 with "KSTFire" on the envelope. The office business hours for those submitting hand-delivered comments are: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. For objection eligibility, each individual or representative from each entity submitting timely and specific written comments regarding the EA must either sign the comments or verify identity upon request §218.24(b)(8). Comments received in response to this initial request, including names, addresses, and any other information provided with the comments, will be considered a part of the public record and will be subject to the Freedom of Information Act and released if requested. In cases where no identifiable name is attached to a comment, a verification of identity will be required for objection eligibility.
