Applicants sought for the MVPHA Resident Board Member
The Board of Commissioners of the Mesilla Valley Public Housing Authority (MVPHA) has an opening on the Board for a Resident Commissioner. Please note that this is a volunteer position.
Board members are responsible for approving policy for governance of the Housing Authority. The Commission consists of five members. Two are appointed by the Mayor of Las Cruces, two by the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners and a Resident Commissioner appointed by the Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. The Housing Authority Board meets at 4:30 p.m. every third Tuesday of the month for about 90 minutes.
Qualifications of individual Commissioner:
Interest in affordable housing issues
Knowledge of community at large
Ability to participate in agency and agency-related meetings
Willingness to make the necessary time commitment of approximately 5 hours per month, as well as willingness to participate in regular training events and to represent the Housing Authority at given times in the public arena
Ability to work as team members with other commissioners and Executive Director, building consensus toward the best possible stewardship of scarce public resources to address local housing needs
Ability to participate in electronic communications (monthly Board packets and other notices and questions that may arise)
Ability to travel to training/conferences
Cannot be a current Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program landlord or rent to an HCV participant during term as commissioner
Appointed by the Mayor of the City of Las Cruces and the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners (initial term is 1-5 years; then 5 year terms)
Resident Board Members:
A resident board member is a member of the governing board who is directly assisted by the public housing agency
An eligible resident is a person:
1-Who is directly assisted by Mesilla Valley Public Housing Agency;
Must be residing in a Public Housing Property/Unit
or
Must be a Section 8/HCV Voucher holder
2-Whose name appears on the lease; and
3-Is eighteen years of age or older
