NEVADA COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS REGULAR MEETING MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2025 GATES CONFERENCE ROOM AT 825 15TH ST NEVADA PRESENT: BOARD MEMBERS: Marty Chitty, Leanne Harter, Joe Anderson, Tom Maier, Jaden Grimm STAFF: Dr Kody Asmus, Tammy Ellis 1. Call to Order at 6:30 p.m. 2. Approval of Agenda Motion by Harter to approve the agenda with an addition, second by Anderson Motion Carried 3-0 3. Public Comment – None 4. Information Agenda 4.1 Welcome to 2025-26 Student Board Members: Chitty introduced Chiara Chappell who is returning as a student board member for the second year & new student school board member Jaden Grimm. 4.2 FFA Update: Mr. Cooper told the board the students have been busy in FFA and had students present some work they were able to be involved in over the summer. Gavin Egeland presented his time as a Borlaug-Ruan International Intern over the summer. To apply he had to go through several steps that included the Iowa Institute in Ames, The Global Youth Institute, and concludes with an extensive application with three zoom interviews, selection and placement in a country. Gavin was placed in Nairobi, Kenya at the International Livestock Research Institute. He spent eight weeks researching along side Dr. Kelvin Shikuku, a Senior Economist. Gavin helped implement index-based livestock insurance to make it more affordable and accessible for rural farmers. Gavin was very grateful for the great experience he received and encourages those that have gone to the Iowa Youth Institute to apply. Gavin also received a nice scholarship to Iowa State. Mackenzie Olesen and Abi Woodard presented their time at the Leadership Conference in Washington DC. They were able to tour different monuments and the capitol building. They met other students from different states, were able to form bonds with while they were in groups working on projects on how to better their community and what they can do to better themselves. Both students said it was a great experience that they were able to bring back with them to help implement in their own communities. Jaden Grimm, FFA President, talked about AG Day that involves spending the day with the 7th grade class. The students are in small groups that go through different sessions that include: Drone Technology, Vet Tech ISU, Food Technology with Burke, Story County Conservation, AG Safety with Todd Sampson, FFA Opportunities with FFA Officers, and Animal Husbandry. It's a great day for the students to get knowledge in agriculture. Jared Drenth attended the Iowa State Fair as an Usher. Ushers have several different volunteer opportunities such as helping with concerts, handing out pamphlets as Fair goers come into the Fair. More opportunities included volunteering at the sheep shearing contest and livestock judging. It was a great experience volunteering and meeting other FFA members from across that state. Mr. Cooper, updated the board on recent news talks that he had with radio KFJB and KIX 101.1 and the Times Republican all showed interest in helping Mr. Cooper share all the great things happening with the Nevada FFA. 5. Action Agenda 5.1 Policy Update: 503.4 – Extra-Curricular Code of Conduct – Motion by Maier to approve Policy Update 503.4 as presented, second by Harter. Motion Carried 4-0 6. Board Items 7.1 Board Member Comments: Joe Anderson announced that he will not be running for school board this time. Chitty and Maier thanked Joe for his years of service on the board and he will definitely be missed. Chitty and Maier both appreciated the way Joe's perspective and drills down in regards to the various board items that are discussed.
