Nevada Community School District Board of Directors Minutes of Regular Meeting Monday May 18, 2026 Gates Conference Room Present: Board Members: Marty Chitty, Tom Maier, Leanne Harter, Emily Schaack, Tori Carsrud Staff:Dr Steve Gray, Tammy Ellis 1.Call to Order at 6:30 p.m. 2.Approval of the Agenda – Motion by Carsrud, seconded by Harter to approve the agenda with additions. Motion carried 5-0 3.Public Comment –None 4.Public Hearing: FY26 Budget Amendment – Board President Chitty opened the public hearing for the FY26 budget amendment. 4.1 Presentation – Tammy Ellis, Business Manager, shared the budget amendment for the end of the FY26 fiscal year. 4.2 Public Comment – No one was present for public comment. 4.3 Approval Budget Amendment – Motion by Carsrud seconded by Maier to approve the FY26 Budget Amendment. Motion Carried 5-0 with Carsrud, Schaack, Chitty, Maier, and Harter all voting Yes. 5. Action Agenda – 5.1 Elementary Water Heaters – Dr Gray updated the board on the water heater issues at the elementary school that are no longer under warranty and need to be replaced. A motion by Carsrud seconded by Harter to approve option 1 to replace the water heaters and remove the tanks for $57,000. Motion carried 5-0 5.2 School Safety Grant – Dr Gray brought the School Safety Grant topic back to the board. He shared 3 difference quotes that the board asked SRO Lane Vanderhart to provide. It was determined the grant only included the entrances and not all windows. It was also discussed that the security cameras would not work well with the bullet resistant laminate. Motion by Carsurd seconded by Harter to approve the school safety grant. Motion failed 0-5 with Chitty, Maier, Harter, Carsrud, and Schaack all voting No. 5.3 Policy Updates: 307, 307.R1, 307.R2, 307.R3, 2nd Reading – Dr Gray presented the policy updates from the May 4th board meeting. Motion by Carsrud seconded by Schaack to adopt the policy updates, waiving a 3rd reading. Motion carried 5-0 6.Consent Agenda – Motion by Schaack seconded by Maier to approve the agenda as presented. [6/8/26] Retirement: • Sue Uthe Transportation [6/30/26] 6.4 Overnight Stays – Activity Department requests overnight stays for the Wartburg College Women's Basketball Camp and the Boys Cross Country Lake MacBride State Park Trip. The FFA requested various overnight trips for the 2026-27 year that includes Iowa State Fair Ushers Aug 13-23, World Food Prize Oct 20-22, National FFA Convention Oct 21-24, and the Washing DC Leadership Conference in June 2027 6.5 Operational Sharing Renewal – Renewals for Transportation Maintenance/Service with Baxter CSD and a Library Consultant with Baxter CSD. 7. Board Items 7.1 Board Member Comments – Carsrud gave a shout out to all who participated in the graduation for a job well done. 7.2 The next regular Board meeting is Monday June 1, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. Adjourn: 7:01 pm 8.Closed Session – Superintendent Review: Pursuant to Iowa Code section 21.5(1)(i) to evaluate the professional competencty of an individual whose appointment, hiring, performance or discharge is being considered when necessary to prevent needless and irreparable injury to that individual's reputation and that individual requests a closed session. 9.
