PRESS RELEASE
TOWN OF ULYSSES SET TO ADVANCE COMPREHENSIVE PLANNING PROCESS AND HOST A SECOND PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE
The Town of Ulysses is preparing to advance an update to its comprehensive plan – a decision-making framework that shapes policies, programs, projects, and services in the community. Town leadership commissioned the plan in 2023 to address critical issues surrounding economic development, housing, the built environment, the natural environment, climate resilience, infrastructure, parks, land use, and preservation of the community's rural character.
The project is being led by a community-driven steering committee of local residents and stakeholders who have been meeting to craft a project plan and source expertise in planning and community development. Since April 2023, the committee has evaluated demographic and market data, drafted a vision for future community character, and identified specific strategies to advance Ulysses toward its vision. It's anticipated that the committee will culminate their review this autumn.
On Wednesday March 19, 2025,the Town hosted the first Comprehensive Plan public open house at the Trumansburg School Library. The second public open house will be on Monday October 6, 2025 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM, at Racker, 3226 Wikins Road Ithaca, NY 14850.
The following draft Comprehensive Plan Elements will be available for public review and comment at the next interactive open house: Housing, Economic Development, Transportation, Environment and Natural Resources, Climate Change and Resiliency, Community Well Being, and Built Environment, Land Use, Capital Facilities and Utilities, and the environmental assessment (SEQR).
Public engagement is a critical piece of the overall project plan. Visit the Town's Comprehensive Plan website (www.ulyssesunited.org) for information on the planning process, steering committee activity, to review draft documents and reports, and for opportunities to engage in the process.
The comprehensive plan project was funded in part by the Climate Smart Communities program of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Plan elements will advance the goals of this program in ensuring that Ulysses evaluates future growth and development with an eye toward climate resilience.
