Preschool is the Foundation
Too many times, preschool is looked at as a "daycare" or a "babysitting facility". Preschool is so much more than that. It quite literally sets the academic foundation for children's educational journey.
In a preschool setting, there are ABCs, and 123s and colors, but preschool also teaches social and emotional skills. That is where so many preschools have been failing as of late. Anger, frustration and sadness are valid emotions that should be taught how to be handled properly.
Children that attend preschool are learning the responsibility of getting up each morning and going to school. It will make the transition to elementary school a little smoother. If you really stop and think about it longterm, look at us as parents. We must get up every morning and go to work. I understand these points may seem small, but it is the framework that sets them up for the rest of their life.
And then we have the obvious, VPK, which is supposed to prepare children for kindergarten. Vpk teaches letter recognition and sounds that prepares children for reading, which is also a long-term skill.
Preschool may be looked at as glorified babysitting to some. The more years I teach in early childhood the more important and valuable I believe preschool truly is.
