City of Opelousas - Library Renovation Project
The City of Opelousas is notifying citizens that the Main Branch Library Renovation project will begin in January 2026 and completion anticipated in August 2026. The library will possibly be closed during renovation activities. Any anticipated closures will be posted at the library. The project focuses on improving accessibility, safety, and operational efficiency to better serve the community. The scope includes the repair and replacement of the existing elevator to ensure full accessibility and compliance with current ADA standards, enhancing ease of use for all patrons. The dedicated children's area will be revitalized with a new kid's stage and a reading zone. Restroom facilities will be modernized to improve safety, accessibility, and service to occupants. The circulation desk and related areas will be upgraded for more efficient operations, while new computer stations will be added in open, visible locations. Safety-related code upgrades will address the installation of new guardrails and handrails throughout the facility. Exterior improvements will consist of energy-efficient glass replacement, repairs to the library's exterior brick signage, and repainting of the plinths on both the sign and the building. Collectively, these enhancements will create a safer, more accessible, and more sustainable library environment that supports community learning, engagement, and inclusion.
