Public Notice
This is the Public Notice of Significant Noncompliance (SNC) of Industrial Pretreatment Standards for the Town of Smyrna which is in compliance to the EPA Pretreatment Regulation 40 CFR 403.8(f)(2)(viii). In the past 12 months, two industries have been in significant noncompliance.
Taylor Farms Tennessee, Inc. has been in significant noncompliance with the industrial Pretreatment standards of Smyrna, TN. Taylor Farms was in SNC for daily maximum and monthly average flow during the first semiannual reporting period of 2025. They were not in SNC for the second semiannual reporting period. Taylor Farms has recently undergone improvements to their production procedures and equipment to significantly reduce the amount of water used. They continue to show improvements in these areas.
MI Metals, Inc. has been in significant noncompliance with the industrial Pretreatment standards of Smyrna, TN. They were in SNC for daily max and monthly average Total Suspended Solids (TSS) for both semiannual reporting periods in 2025. Changes were made in production area cleaning procedures to combat issues with TSS, as well as the installation of a triple filtration system. However, due to the exceptionally high concentrations of TSS MI Metals has opted to discontinue discharge to the Town until upgrades to their production and treatment areas are completed. Recent communications indicate that the new upgrades are expected to be completed and the plant operational by February 2026.
The Town would like to express our appreciation of these industries for taking action to return their facilities to compliance. The Town's priority is the health and safety of the community and environment, and the cooperation of our industries is vital to that mission.
